Understanding Your Shop's Capacity

Maximum performance isn't a goal — it's a ceiling. Knowing your theoretical max helps you understand how much of your capacity you're actually using and where the opportunities are.

Capacity Utilization

  • Below 60%: Significant untapped revenue — focus on car count and marketing before hiring.
  • 60–80%: Healthy utilization with room to grow. Optimize scheduling to push toward 80%.
  • Above 80%: Near capacity. Time to consider adding bays, extending hours, or raising rates.

Key Variables

  • Bays vs. techs: Empty bays don't produce revenue — match staffing to your available lifts.
  • Efficiency %: 100% efficiency is theoretical. Real-world target is 85–95% for well-run shops.
  • Effective labor rate: Discounts and warranty work lower your effective rate below door rate.
